Cerebral vasospasm is a delayed narrowing of the large capacitative arteries at the base of the brain, most commonly occurring after a Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (SAH).
The Biological Trigger
When a dynamic bleed occurs, red blood cells break down in the subarachnoid space, releasing oxyhemoglobin. This substance is toxic to vessel walls and triggers a cascade of inflammatory responses, leading to prolonged smooth muscle contraction (vasoconstriction).
Management Strategies
Nimodipine: A calcium channel blocker proven to improve outcomes.
